Fees

Harbor Road Psychiatry is an out-of-network practice. We do not bill insurance companies directly, which means we are not restricted by any insurance panel in the time we spend with you, the treatments we recommend, or how often we see you. Many of our patients use out-of-network benefits to receive partial reimbursement for their care — here is how that works.

Why Out-of-Network

What that means for your care.

Being out-of-network is a deliberate choice, not a limitation. It lets us practice psychiatry the way it should be practiced.

Full-length appointments

No insurance-mandated time limits — visits run as long as your care actually requires.

Treatment based on your needs

Recommendations are never shaped by what an insurance panel will or won't approve.

Privacy

Insurers are not part of your treatment record when you don't bill through them directly.

Continuity

You keep the same psychiatrist over time, regardless of insurance network changes.

Getting Reimbursed

How superbills work.

Most PPO plans offer out-of-network benefits, and a superbill is how you access them.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is a detailed receipt of the services you received — visit dates, diagnosis codes, and procedure codes — formatted specifically for insurance reimbursement. After each appointment, we provide one automatically; there's nothing extra for you to request.

How you use it

You pay for your visit at the time of service, then submit the superbill directly to your insurance company — typically through their member portal or by mail. Your insurer then reimburses you directly, according to your plan's out-of-network benefit.

What you'll be reimbursed

Reimbursement amounts vary by plan — commonly 50–80% of the visit cost once any out-of-network deductible has been met. We recommend calling the member services number on your insurance card and asking specifically about "out-of-network outpatient mental health / psychiatry benefits" before your first visit, so there are no surprises.

Questions to ask your insurer

  • Do I have out-of-network coverage for outpatient psychiatry?
  • What is my out-of-network deductible, and has it been met?
  • What percentage of the visit cost is reimbursed after the deductible?
  • Is there a limit on the number of visits covered per year?
