Ahmad Hassan, MD
Child & Adolescent PsychiatristDr. Ahmad Hassan is a double board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist who provides expert, lifespan-focused care tailored to each individual and family. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He treats children, adolescents, and adults. His clinical interests include depression, anxiety, and ADHD, and he has a particular focus on psychopharmacology.
Dr. Hassan completed his general psychiatry residency at Maimonides Medical Center, the Brooklyn campus of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He then pursued advanced fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center, one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers. He also completed psychoanalytic training through the NYU-affiliated Institute for Psychoanalytic Education. This gives him a depth of understanding of how development, relationships, and inner experience shape a person’s struggles. That understanding informs his work alongside evidence-based treatment.
Research has been part of Dr. Hassan’s career since his fellowship. At UT Southwestern, he took part in a research project investigating how anhedonia and irritability contribute to depression in young people. This work sharpened his attention to the symptoms that shape how depression looks and feels in children and adolescents. He also pursues ongoing self-guided education, including the NIH Office of Clinical Research’s certificate training in the principles and practice of clinical research, to stay current with advances in the field and bring them into his care.
Dr. Hassan is also an experienced and dedicated educator. He is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. Over more than a decade, he has taught and mentored learners at every level of training, including medical students, resident physicians, fellows, and advanced practice nursing students. He has also presented at hospital grand rounds. His colleagues have honored him twice with the Faculty Educator of the Year Award in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship, in 2022 and 2024. Teaching keeps his practice current, and it reflects his commitment to explaining things clearly to patients and families.
As Medical Director of an Emergency Psychiatry Service, Dr. Hassan has guided patients and families through acute, high-stress situations with calm, clear expertise. He makes rapid, careful assessments and coordinates the next steps in care. He previously served as Medical Director of a Child and Adolescent Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service. In that role he cared for young people whose emotional and behavioral symptoms were closely tied to medical illness. Together, these roles have given him extensive experience in medical-psychiatric integration and in psychosomatic illness, where physical and emotional health influence one another. He works closely with each person’s broader care team, including primary care physicians, pediatricians, specialists, and therapists, so that treatment is unified and supportive.
In his practice, Dr. Hassan combines thoughtful medication management with CBT-informed and psychodynamic psychotherapy, drawing on his psychoanalytic training, along with family interventions. His goal is a grounded, compassionate environment where you and your family feel heard and supported, and are equipped with practical strategies for lasting healing. Dr. Hassan is fluent in English and Arabic, which allows him to connect directly with patients and families from a wide range of backgrounds.
